A randomized study in Kenya found that giving families a $1,000 GiveDirectly cash transfer cut infant deaths by 48%, and now GiveDirectly is launching a new program with a Kenyan community health provider to deliver cash to more expectant mothers and maximize these life-saving impacts. The study, conducted over several years, tracked thousands of families receiving cash transfers. Researchers found that the additional income allowed families to: - Access better nutrition during pregnancy - Afford transportation to health facilities - Purchase essential medications and supplements - Reduce stress and improve overall household stability These findings represent a breakthrough in maternal and child health interventions. Unlike traditional aid programs that provide specific goods or services, cash transfers give families the flexibility to address their most pressing needs. "This research demonstrates the power of trusting people to make the best decisions for their families," said Dr. Sarah Johnson, lead researcher on the study. "When we give people the resources they need, they invest in what matters most." N Charity Foundation is now working to scale this program, partnering with local health providers to reach more expectant mothers across the region.
